Focus on 'Cranial' Osteopathy
Although we are experts at bringing together many different 'ingredients' for treating the patient (including hands-on techniques, joint and muscle manipulation, therapeutic ultrasound, nutrition/ lifestyle/ exercise modification, etc.), one of the core approaches is often (mis-)labelled Cranial Osteopathy
‘Cranial’ Osteopathy was developed in early 1900 by the American Osteopath William Sutherland. He believed that in order for the brain and central nervous system to function properly, the bones of the skull must move slightly in a rhythmical motion.
He experimented on himself, using a helmet-like device that prevented his head from changing circumferences, and found that restriction of this motion could produce pain and affect overall health.
A specially-trained Osteopath is able to palpate these movements (which are reflected throughout the body as well as the cranium) and detect restrictions. Using light touch and pressure to the bones of the head or the spinal column he or she can release joint and connective tissue tensions blocking the natural motion between bones. It is an extremely gentle therapy and can be used on a range of conditions from insomnia, digestive upsets, infertility and tinnitus to high blood pressure, aches and pain and fatigue. It is highly recommended for pregnant women, babies and young children.
